Chef's recommendation

Black walnut is the most expensive hardwood a boardmaker can choose, and the one the best chefs choose anyway. Cut end grain, it stays flat, keeps a knife sharp and outlasts everything else in the kitchen. Put a family name on it and it stops being kitchenware: it becomes the thing that gets passed down.

Story behind H&S

Three brothers. One board. Our father's rules.

Our father cut boards for people who cooked for a living. He never advertised. Butchers and cooks found him the way they find a good knife sharpener: someone they trusted told them.

He had three rules, and we grew up hearing them at dinner. Harrow & Sons is the three of us keeping those rules, for kitchens that aren't restaurants. The board is his. The guarantee is ours.

A board you replace every two years isn't a tool. It's a subscription.

On the counter, in real kitchens

Emily Carter

I opened the box to check the engraving before wrapping it for my husband. Ended up sending my sister three photos. Our last name on the walnut makes it feel like something I actually chose for him.

First night with it, so I can’t speak to how it holds up yet. But the weight feels right, the grain is beautiful, and my good knife finally has a board I’m happy to use it on.

Really liked the feel of chopping on it. Took this halfway through cooking and sent it to my brother.

My husband is impossible to buy for. He usually says he doesn’t need anything, then puts the gift away. This time he went straight to the kitchen and asked what we were making for dinner. That’s him showing off the engraving.

β€œOur kitchen is rarely this quiet. The board stays out on the counter because someone is always slicing bread or starting dinner. I thought I’d put it away between meals, but there doesn’t seem to be much point.”

Questions

Before you order

Will it warp or crack?

End grain is the construction least likely to move, and the board is finished and conditioned before it ships. If it ever cracks, splits or warps within two years, we replace it.

Is it heavy? Will it fit my sink?

The 13 Γ— 9 board is about 5.5 lb and fits any standard kitchen sink. The 16 Γ— 12 is about 9 lb and fits most. Both have finger grips on the ends.

How much care does it need?

Rinse, wipe, stand it on its edge. Once a month, a thin coat of food-grade mineral oil. Never the dishwasher. One minute, that's all.

Where is the name engraved? Do I cut on it?

On the serving side. The working side with the juice groove stays clean, so the knife never touches the name. Up to 24 characters in English script. We email a proof before engraving.

When will it arrive? Will it make Christmas?

Each board is finished and engraved to order: 3–4 weeks from order to door, tracked. Order by November 25 for Christmas. If we're cutting it close, we send a card you can wrap and the board follows.

What if I change my mind?

An unengraved board can be returned within 30 days for a full refund. Engraved boards are made for you, so they can't be returned, but the two-year guarantee covers them in full.
